Centre For Human Development (CHD)

Promoting Sustainable Development

The Centre for Human Development (CHD) was established in the early 1990s to create an intellectual space for interdisciplinary policy relevant research and evidence based advocacy on poverty, governance, gender issues, health and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS. It promotes the sustainable development goals* and explores how best to manage inclusive growth. CHD was registered (Reg. No. 9480 of 29th May, 1996) as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) in compliance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Its vision is to be a foremost international research, training and development agency creating knowledge and improving practices on the most critical problems of development. CHD’s mandate is to partner with governments, donor agencies, community based organizations to develop sustainable community development policies and programs to meet global development challenges. The objectives of the Centre are to carry out interdisciplinary research on poverty, gender issues, governance, health and reproductive health and HIV/AIDS, build capacity of individuals and institutions on the above thematic areas, implement development programs to reduce poverty, maternal and childhood diseases, reproductive health problems, revert the spread of HIV/AIDS particularly among girls, women and other vulnerable groups, promote good governance and gender equality. Moving forward in the 2015-2020 program period CHD will scale up research on gender and governance, patterns of accumulation in the formal and informal sectors to understand the gender implications of economic reforms, support private sector organizations to promote STEM education* for girls and gender sensitive workplaces as part of a vibrant agenda for women’s empowerment and gender equality*.
